The name Nambour is a local Aboriginal word (Naamba) that meant red flowering tea-tree or its bark. (1) Nambour is a thriving rural community today, but did you know it was initially called Petrie's Creek? It was renamed Nambour in 1891, after the 'Nambour' cattle station.

(2) Pat Rafter, our famous tennis star, made his debut in Nambour. You will find his name on the wall of the local tennis club, where it has been since he won the junior championship as a sixteen-year-old. You might remember that Pat won the U.S. Open twice.

(3) Until as recently as the 1970s, sugar cane in the area was cut by hand, the reason being that the hilly terrain was not suitable for cane-cutting machines.
