Caloundra is one of the older areas within the Sunshine Coast region that boasts some of the best beaches and magnificent ocean views. We are sure you will agree it's also a fantastic place for families and couples to settle into, with plenty of parks, BBQ areas, cafes, restaurants and shopping centres.

Nevertheless, there are a few historical facts you may not know about Caloundra, so read on!

(1) The origin of the name Caloundra was acquired from the Gubbi Gubbi dialect – 'kal'owen', or beech tree and 'dha', meaning place – indicating 'place of beech tree'. The name varied, and was spelt as Kalowen, Cullawanda or Galouwen. There were plentiful Beech trees in the area that were cut out by timber-getters. The few white visitors to the region began using the name Caloundra by 1865.

(2) There is a fascinating story about the two lighthouses, which you will see up the hill from Bulcock Street. The original lighthouse, an oil-filled wick burner, was built on the hill in 1896 since Caloundra had become the principal access point to Brisbane harbour. The second lighthouse was built beside the original in 1968. Afterwards, the original lighthouse was moved to Golden Beach, where it operated as the clubhouse for the Power Boat Club for many years. The old lighthouse was moved back to its original position in 1999. Today they can both be inspected up there on the hill. Visitors can view a plaque with extensive information in front of the two lighthouses.

(3) Matthew Flinders sailed into the channel between Caloundra and Bribie Island in 1799, where he stayed for 16 days. When he saw the pumice stone on the shore, he named the channel Pumicestone River.
